The Mitacs Globalink Research Internship (GRI) will open for applications in early August

Taiwan-Canada Bilateral Fellowship Program

The National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) has been dedicated to promoting science and research partnerships between Taiwan and Canada. To further enhance the interaction and relationships, NSTC has collaborated with Mitacs to provide funding for the Taiwan-Canada Bilateral Fellowship Program.

Founded in 1999, Mitacs is a national non-profit organization supported by the Canadian government. Its mission is to bridge top research and enterprise needs, facilitating knowledge transfer among universities, enterprises, and government, and help Canadian enterprises to innovate and grow. Currently, it maintains long-term cooperation with 65 universities and over 6,000 enterprises across Canada and globally. Mitacs has grown rapidly over the past 20 years and has accumulated over 34,000 research collaborations to date.

The Taiwan-Canada Bilateral Talent Cultivation Program includes the Globalink Research Internship (GRI) and the Globalink Research Award (GRA)

Globalink Research Internship (GRI)

Purpose

Supporting Taiwanese students in exploring and expanding their horizons in research for future career development.

Application period

Applications are open from early August to September. Please refer to the announcement schedule on the Mitacs GRI website.

Internship Duration

12 weeks between May and October of the following year

Eligibility

  • Must be a citizen of the Republic of China (Taiwan).
  • Be enrolled in a full-time undergraduate students in the third year or above, or in a 5-year Bachelor's and Master's combined program, at universities and colleges in Taiwan.
  • Minimum cumulative grade point average: CGPA  ≧ 3.3 (77%)
  • Language proficiency:
    TOEFL iBT ≧ 79 or  ITP 550 ; or
    IELTS (ACADEMIC) ≧ 6.0; or
    TOEIC ≧ 785

*Applicants must remain enrolled as students throughout the application and internship period.

Funding

The amount of Globalink research internship award is up to CAD12,000. This including payment made to participants (airfare, insurance, stipends) and payments made by Mitacs on behalf of the participant (training, administration, and research costs…etc).

Number of Seats

Up to thirty (30) participants from Taiwan per year

  • Application should be submitted through the Mitacs web portal.
  • Applicants should not have previously been awarded a Globalink Research Internship.
  • To ensure accurate information, applicants are required to visit the Mitacs GRI website and carefully review the requirements before submitting their applications.

 

Globalink Research Award

Purpose

Engaging in collaborative research projects involving scholars from both Taiwan and Canada to promote bilateral research partnership and talent cultivation

Application period

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis; the deadline for submissions is by the end of August. Please refer to the announcement schedule on the Mitacs GRA website.

Internship Duration

12- 24 weeks.

*Projects must begin within one year of the outcome letter being issued

Travel to Canada and travel from Canada

Eligibility

Outbound-From Taiwan to Canada program eligibility requirement:

  • Must be a citizen of the Republic of China (Taiwan).
  • Be a full-time master’s and PhD students, or postdoctoral fellows at universities and colleges in Taiwan and remain as such throughout their Globalink Research Award.
  • Postdoctoral fellows may apply if their date of graduation for a PhD program is no more than five years prior to the proposed start date of the research project.
  • Participants cannot undertake a research project at an institution where they have previously completed a degree.

Inbound-From Canada to Taiwan program eligibility requirement:

  • Must be a citizen of Canada. 
  • Be a full-time master’s and PhD students, or postdoctoral fellows at Canada institution and remain as such throughout the application and Globalink Research Award.
  • Postdoctoral fellows may apply if their date of graduation for a PhD program is no more than five years prior to the proposed start date of the research project.
  • Participants cannot undertake a research project at an institution where they have previously completed a degree.

Funding

The amount of Globalink Research Award is up to CAD6,000, including travel, accommodation, research-related expenses, and stipend.

Submission

Submit to Mitacs through the local Mitacs Advisor

Number of Seats

  • From Taiwan:  up to thirty (30) participant each year
  • From Canada: up to thirty (30) participant each year

Note

  • Applicants should not have previously been awarded a Globalink Research Award.
  • Applicants should have identified a research project that is supported by the Canadian institutions and will be jointly supervised by both the applicant’s host and home country institution professors.
  • To ensure accurate information, applicants are required to visit the Mitacs GRA website and carefully review the requirements and details before submitting their applications.

Additional NSTC Funding

For Taiwanese students awarded the GRI/GRA

The NSTC provides an additional internship scholarship of NT$30,000 exclusively for Taiwanese students awarded the GRI /GRA (travel from Taiwan to Canada only).

To apply for additional NTSC funding, please complete the application form and include the GRI/GRA award letter along with your enrollment certificate.

The funding payment will be processed upon arrival at the internship institution and upon obtaining the internship certification signed by the supervising professor.

For hosting professors in Taiwan (GRA)

For hosting professor in Taiwan, the NSTC also provides an additional subsidy of NT$10,000 per case to support the research project.

To apply for additional NTSC subsidy, please complete the application form  along with the inbound student’s  GRA award letter.
