Great Visit to the University of Mississippi at Oxford, MS

The Science and Technology Division of TECO in Houston paid a visit to University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) on June 13-15 and had a great meeting with Dean Alexander H.D. Cheng, Prof. Waheed Uddin, Prof. Sam Wang, Prof. Mustafa S. Altinakar and many other faculties during the visit. The main purpose of this trip is to introduce the functions of S & T Division and build the connection between the Engineering School of Ole Miss and Universities in Taiwan. In addition to the briefing given by both sides, Director C. P. Chou and Ms. Patricia Liu was offered a tour to the Department of Civil Engineering and met with the Interim Chair, Prof. Chris L. Mullen. Another great event is to participate in a presentation given by F. A. P. Barnard Distinguished Professor Emeritus, Pro. Sam Wang, who was the Director of the National Center for Computational Hydroscience and Engineering (NCCHE). The NCCHE has been supported by the US Federal Government with more than $25 million since 1989, with a Congressional Mandate to advance the state of the art on Numerical-Empirical Modeling in Hydroscience & Engineering. It covers modeling of free surface flows, materials transport, erosion and deposition processes and its related environmental/ecological protection, flood prediction and management, etc. Over the past 25 years, numerous computational models have been developed, vigorously verified/validated, and continuously maintained and upgraded to stay at the cutting-edge of the state-of-the-art as mandated by the Congress. These models have been given to the federal agencies or used collaboratively with them to solve the contemporary problems of our society. This Center has established successful cooperative research with NCTU in Taiwan for years and is looking forward to extending similar kind or even broader collaborative relationship with the Engineering College of NCKU via the bridging of S & T Division in Houston.
