Director General
Hung-Wen Li is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemistry at National Taiwan University (NTU). He received his B.S. degree from NTU in 1993 and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2000. He subsequently completed postdoctoral training as a Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation Fellow at Brandeis University from 2000 to 2004. In 2004, he began his independent academic career as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry at McGill University in Canada. He returned to NTU in 2007, where he has since played a leading role in advancing Taiwan’s single-molecule biophysical chemistry research community.
Prof. Li’s research centers on the development and application of single-molecule optical microscopy to investigate the assembly and regulation of protein-DNA complexes. His work has yielded important mechanistic insights into DNA damage repair through quantitative physical and chemical approaches. His distinguished honors include the NTU Chemical Biology Lectureship (2025), the NSTC Outstanding Research Award (2022), the University Excellence Teaching Award (2013), the FAOS Outstanding Young Scholar Award (2007), and the FQRNT New Investigator Award (2005). Most recently, under the Science Vanguard Research Grant, he and his team have developed innovative tools that integrate structural and dynamic perspectives, thereby advancing mechanistic understanding of how biological systems function.
Prof. Li has also provided long-standing service to the scientific community. He is a council member of the Taiwanese Biophysical Society. He served as Convenor of the Chemistry Division at Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Council from 2021 to 2023, and as Chair of the Department of Chemistry at NTU from 2025 to 2026.
