OVERVIEW
Shortly after the Independence Day ceremony that gave birth to the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, on October 10, 1945, President Ho Chi Minh signed Decree No. 45/SL establishing the Faculty of Literature at Hanoi University with the aim of bringing the country's science level "up to par with advanced countries worldwide." On November 15, 1945, the Vietnam National University, Hanoi held its first opening ceremony at 19 Le Thanh Tong Street, Hanoi.
During the nine-year protracted resistance war, university centers were established in Viet Bac, Military Region IV, with facilities located in Nanning (China).
Following the victory in the resistance war against the French, Vietnamese higher education continued to develop and expand. On June 4, 1956, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 2183/CP establishing Hanoi University. In 1957, President Ho Chi Minh visited the university's staff and students.
From 1956 to 1995, the University experienced a period of strong development as a leading center for basic science research and training in the country, effectively serving the cause of national construction and defense. Leading professors and scientists worked and dedicated their efforts and intellect here. The most fundamental foundations of Vietnamese science were built and their value affirmed. From this very institution, many cadres and students bravely sacrificed their lives for the glorious revolutionary cause of the nation.
In September 1995, building upon the foundation of the social sciences and humanities disciplines of Hanoi University, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities was officially established and became a member of Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
It can be said that the University of Social Sciences and Humanities today is a continuation of the history of the Faculty of Literature in August, of Hanoi University, and of Vietnam National University, Hanoi, aiming to become an advanced research university with the mission of "leading in training high-quality human resources, creating and disseminating knowledge in social sciences and humanities." In its 80 years of construction and development, the University of Social Sciences and Humanities has always been considered by the Vietnamese Party and State as the largest center for training and research in social sciences and humanities in the country, tasked with training a high-level team of basic science personnel to serve the cause of national construction and defense.
