I. FOUNDATION

Chiang Mai University was founded in January 1964, in a Royal Charter granted by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. CMU, or Mor Chor as it is known locally, was the first institute of higher education in the north, and the first provincial university in Thailand.

 

II. CORPORATE MISSION

To be a premier university seeking excellence in the advancement and dissemination of knowledge to meet the challenges our nation faces in a globalizing world.

 

III. OBJECTIVES

In line with our Corporate Mission, our Objectives are:

- To provide access to an international standard of multidisciplinary education.
- To initiate and conduct innovative research and development projects.
- To conserve and nurture our cultural heritage
- To provide service to the community – with special attention to the needs and priorities of the North of Thailand

 

IV. DEVELOPMENT

O Today, CMU has seventeen faculties with 107 individual departments, and a Graduate School. We currently offer a total of 253 programs: 3 Certificate Programs, 87 undergraduate programs and 163 postgraduate and graduate diploma programs, to more than twenty-five thousand students.

O In addition, two international Bachelors program and 18 international Masters and Doctoral programs, taught in English language, are presently being offered to international students by Social Sciences, Health Sciences, and Science and Technology faculties.

V. UNIVERSITY ORGANIZATION

We are a public university, funded in large part through the Ministry of Education. The University is governed by the University Council, which is comprised of 38 members drawn from all sectors of the community. Academic and administration matters are the responsibility of The Academic Committee, chaired by the President, and the Committee for Academic Administration and Cooperation, respectively

VII. RESEARCH FACILITIES

In addition to the discipline-specific research facilities to be found within individual faculties, we have established three interdisciplinary Research Institutes to develop the University’s excellence in research in variety fields, primarily those which fall between specific academic disciplines.

 

O       The Research Institute for Health Sciences (RIHES)

-         The RIHES was founded in 1967 as a research center for anemia and childhood malnutrition, and at the behest of the Government the Institute rapidly broadende its research parameters to include all of the major health problems affecting the populations of northern Thailand and its neighbours. In collaboration with a number of foreign universities and international organization, the four principle themes of research on which the Institute currently focuses are: nutrition and diet –related diseases; reproductive health; infectious and tropical diseases.

-         Since 1967, the RIHES has conducted 325 research projects, of which 278 have been in collaboration with foreign partner institutes and organization, patented the results of 3 research projects, had 63 research papers published in national professional journals and 160 pulished in international journals, and 180 papers presented at national conferences and 291 presented at international conferences.

 

O       The Social Research Institute (SRI)

-         The SRI, established in 1981, conducts supports and coordinates social science research in northern Thailand, provides training in social science research methodology, and serves as a centre for historical –cultural studies of Lanna (Nothern Thailand) society.

-         Since 1981, the SRI has conducted 290 research projects, of which 190 have been carried out in collaboration with foreign partner institutes and journals and 288 pulished in international professional journals, and 96 papers presented at national conferences and 168 presented at international conferences.

 

O       The Institute for Science and Technology Research and Development (IST)

-         Founded in 1987, the IST’s primary function is to provide an organizational structure, comprised of research centres and research units, to facilitate the initation, coordination and support of multi-disciplinary science and technology research projects. The majority of its research projects involve science, engineering, agriculture and agro-industry. At present, the Institutes has 11 research centres coordinating the activities of more than 150 priciples researchers in 35 affiliated research units.

-         Since 1987, the IST has conducted 305 research projects, of which 209 have been carried out in collaboration with foreign partner institutes and organizations, patented the results of 4 research projects, had 36 research paper published in national professional journals, and 90 published in international professional journals, and 126 papers presented at national conferences and 108 presented at international conferences.

IX. NATIONAL COOPERATION

O     On a national level, the university have more than 30 working agreements with organizations in both the government and private sectors

X. INTERNATIONAL LIAISONS

O     At university, faculty and department levels, the university has 146 Collaborative Agreements and Memoranda of Understanding with foreign universities, institutes and international organizations in 27 countries.

O      Projects and programs covered by these Agreements and Memoranda include: academic collaboration, the secondment of thesis advisors and project consultants, joint research, faculty staff and student exchange, curriculum development, joint seminars, and information exchange.
