Science and Technology Division, Taipei Representative Office in the European Union and Belgium was established in May of 1992.
1. In Brief
The Science & Technology (S&T) Division, Taipei Representative Office in the EU and Belgium is a branch office of the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC), Taiwan, ROC. The S&T Division promotes S&T cooperation between the European Union and Taiwan, and supports bilateral scientific and advanced industrial research exchanges between Taiwan and the European countries, namely Belgium, Denmark, Luxembourg, and The Netherlands.
2. Staff members
The S&T Division includes two staff members, namely the Division Director and the Executive Secretary.
3. Missions and Services
Under the supervision of the Taipei Representative Office in the EU and Belgium, the S&T Division deals with the EU S&T related institutions and the above mentioned seven European countries for
- Promoting signing of bilateral science and technology collaboration agreements;
- Encouraging bilateral S&T Joint Research Projects (JRPs);
- Organizing bilateral or multilateral Joint research workshops, seminars or conferences;
- Enhancing S&T related exchange visits among scientists and people with an outstanding S&T record;
- Establishing a bilateral or multilateral training mechanism for Ph.D. students and Post-doctoral researchers;
- Providing information regarding the most recent S&T development in the countries concerned.
4. Implementing the bilateral S&T Cooperation Agreements between NSTC, the European Union, the BeNeLux countries and Denmark.
The European Union
Promoting the EU-Taiwan joint research cooperation under the Framework Program - 'Horizon Europe' (2021-2027) of the European Union.
Belgium
a) Implementing the Scientific Cooperation Agreement between Taiwan's National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) and Belgian Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) and Belgian Fund for Scientific Research (FNRS) and encouraging more general bilateral S&T exchange and collaboration;
b) Implementing the Scientific Cooperation Agreement between Taiwan's National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) and Belgian Interuniversity Micro-electronic Centre (IMEC), and encouraging more S&T exchange and collaboration, notably, for the research area of micro-electronics and semi-conductors;
c) Implementing the Scientific Cooperation Agreement between Taiwan's National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) and Belgian Flanders Institute for Biotechnology (VIB), and encouragingmore exchange and collaboration, notably, for the research area of biotechnology;
d) Implementing the Exchange Programs signed by Taiwanese National Chiao Tung University, Belgian Catholic University of Leuven(KUL), and IMEC and promoting exchange and joint research cooperation for Ph.D. students and Post-doctoral researchers.
The Netherlands
a) Implementing the Scientific Cooperation Agreement between Taiwan's National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) and the Dutch Research Council (NWO) and encouraging more general bilateral S&T exchange and collaboration;
b) Implementing the Scientific Cooperation Agreement between Taiwan's National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) and the Dutch International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS), and encouraging more exchange and collaboration, notably, for the research area of Asian Studies.
Denmark
Implementing the Scientific Cooperation Agreement between Taiwan's National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) and the Danish Technical Council and encouraging bilateral S&T exchange and collaboration.
