Weather and Space Weather Observer – FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC

Background: FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC is the first major space program collaboration between Taiwan and the United States. The weather satellite was launched in 2006 with the major mission to implement an advanced instrument using radio occultation technology to establish a near real-time global Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate (COSMIC). The radio occultation data, which have been verified by the international user community, can greatly reduce weather forecast errors up to 20% and enhance both space weather studies and climate research. The data said as the most accurate thermometers in space are used by more than 2,400 global users in 73 countries. Taiwan’s National Space Organization (NSPO) is very happy to share with you the developments and achievements of FORMOSAT-3/COSMIC.
