Postdoctoral Researcher on socio-ecosystem analysis for the South China Sea - Institute of Marine Affairs and Resources Management, National Taiwan Ocean University

The position will contribute to the transdisciplinary (Biodiversa+) project on Peace and Conservation of Ecology at Disputed Seas (PaCE).

Project Overview
Peace and Conservation of Ecology at Disputed Seas (PaCE) is a new transdisciplinary project that aims to demonstrate the transformative potential of peacebuilding to safeguard biodiversity and improve local livelihoods in highly disputed areas such as the South China Sea/West Philippine Sea (SCS/WPS).

Key responsibilities
The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for socio-ecosystem analysis within the PaCE project. Key tasks include:
(1) Identifying telecoupled systems for biodiversity in the SCS/WPS
(2) Evaluating the magnitude and temporal changes in the trading network of marine organisms in the area.
(3) Actively contributing to multi-sectoral stakeholder workshops to foster enabling conditions of science diplomacy for biodiversity conservation of the SCS/WPS.
(4) Supporting field work in Taiwan (e.g., interviews or questionnaire surveys) for other PaCE projects if needed.

Other research topics exploring interconnections between biodiversity and conflicts at the SCS/WPS are possible to be developed subject to discussion with the project PI. The postdoc position will be embedded in an interdisciplinary consortium consisting of scholars who are in Germany and Netherland. The postdoc should participate in the annual project meeting (in person or virtually) in Germany, Taiwan, and the Netherlands. The successful applicant must be willing to move to Taiwan to take up the position.

Requirements
A PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in a topic relevant to the project (e.g. natural resource economics, human geography, environmental geography, marine social science, sustainability science, development studies, social environmental science, social sciences)
Quantitative research skills in trade analysis and expertise in qualitative research
Strong communication and writing skills in English
Ability to collaborate effectively with scholars from other disciplines

Desired qualifications (not required)
Experience with mixed methods approaches
Fluency in Mandarin and strong reading/writing skills in Traditional Chinese

Terms and conditions
This a temporary, full-time position with an annual renewed contract, for a maximum duration of 36 months. Compensation follows the National Taiwan Ocean University pay scale, with a monthly salary starting from TWD$65,005. A hybrid working style (needed to be based in Taiwan) is possible upon arrangement and agreement with the PI.
