The NSTC and SSF Join Hands to Shape the Future of Taiwan–Sweden Scientific Cooperation by Showcasing Joint Achievements in Semicon-ductors, Quantum Technology, and Green Energy

Jan 29, 2026

To further strengthen strategic scientific collaboration between Taiwan and Sweden, the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) of Taiwan and the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF) will jointly host the “Taiwan–Sweden (NSTC–SSF) Bilateral Joint Research Workshop” at the Archipelago Hotel in Yilan, Taiwan from January 29 to 30, 2026.

During the workshop, researchers from both sides will present the results of ongoing bilateral projects and plan for the 2026–2031 phase of Taiwan–Sweden scientific cooperation.

Dr. Bing-Yu Chen, Deputy Minister of NSTC, mentioned in the Opening Ceremony that, in July 2024, the NSTC and SSF officially committed to a Second Phase of collaboration from 2026 to 2031 by renewing its Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Our second phase of cooperation will be significantly broader in scope. In addition to continuing our ongoing work in AI and Biomedicine, we will expand our partnership to ten key strategic fields, which include Space Technology, Quantum Technology, Drones and Robotics, Neuroscience, and Ocean Exploration. Today’s workshop provides us with both a chance to look back at our past five years of accomplishments while formulating strategies to help us achieve greatness over the next five. DM Chen also express his gratitude to Professor Bing-Joe Hwang of the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology(NTUST) and his team for their assistance in planning and organizing this conference.

The Swedish Representative to Taiwan, Helena Reitberger, also attended the workshop and, in her opening remarks, stated that Sweden and Taiwan have a long-standing, comprehensive cooperative relationship, especially the scientific and technological research cooperation between the SSF and the NSTC, which has been highly valued. Recently, the Swedish Representative Office in Taipei and the Ministry of Education of Taiwan have been discussing a scholarship program to actively promote bilateral talent cultivation and exchange between Taiwan and Sweden.

Since 2020, the NSTC and SSF have been supporting a series of high-impact collaborative research projects in strategically important fields, which include semiconductors, quantum, next-generation communications (6G), AI, sustainable and green energy, and advanced materials. These programs, which are both internationally competitive and have a high potential for real-world application, have established long-term partnerships between leading research teams throughout Taiwan and Sweden.

This workshop will bring together the principal investigators and core research teams from 10 Taiwan–Sweden joint projects to cover cutting-edge topics such as GaN high-frequency and high-power HEMT devices, solid-state anodeless lithium batteries (SOLID ALIBI), two-dimensional quantum optoelectronic devices, vacuum electronic structures on a chip, beyond-5G antenna technologies, and CMOS-integrated nanopore biosensors.

Through comprehensive presentations and in-depth technical discussions, the workshop aims to foster cross-disciplinary partnerships and ground-breaking scientific research.

In addition to leading scientists from Taiwan’s top universities, distinguished researchers from Sweden’s premier institutions, such as Chalmers University of Technology, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Uppsala University, will participate in this event. This gathers highlights both the strong potential for future collaboration and the highly complementary research ecosystems of Taiwan and Sweden in areas such as semiconductors, quantum, and green energy.

In addition to presentations on research results, the workshop will feature dedicated sessions for PhD students and early-career researchers, as well as forums on industrial collaboration and research commercialization. These exchanges will leverage Taiwan and Sweden’s bilateral partnerships to form long-term institutional frameworks that cultivate talent and foster connections with the private sector. This workshop marks an important milestone in the Taiwan-Sweden scientific partnership and will pave the way for even more ambitious and impactful collaboration in the future.

The NSTC and SSF are now conducting a joint call for proposals for their second phase (2026-2031) of collaborative projects. This phase will expand the scope of research to ten fields, which includes space, quantum, drones and robotics, 6G, semiconductors, green energy, biomedicine, neuroscience, oceanography, and artificial intelligence. This expansion represents the growing partnership and new direction of science and technology cooperation between Taiwan and Sweden over the next five years.
