Unmanned Aircraft Moonflyer Breaking the Czech Air Endurance Record

On July 10, 2024, a combined team from the Department of Air Transport at the Faculty of Transportation Sciences, Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU), and MoonFlyer Lab from Taiwan's National Formosa University broke the Czech and Taiwanese records for continuous flight. The civilian unmanned aircraft Moonflyer sustained flight for 25 hours and 53 minutes.

Unmanned aviation presents technical challenges that must constantly be overcome, especially for solutions not backed by vast capital. Increasing the efficiency of unmanned aircraft flight to extend endurance is one such challenge. The more efficient the aircraft, the lighter it can be due to the need for fewer batteries, thereby opening up significant opportunities for utilizing the saved weight.

The collaboration between National Formosa University and the Faculty of Transportation Sciences CTU in Prague developed over the past twelve months, culminating in a series of test flights concluded with a flight that set new endurance records for unmanned aircraft in both the Czech Republic and Taiwan. The eighteen-day event required considerable logistical efforts, as the unmanned aircraft was constructed in Taiwan and transported along with part of the Taiwanese team to the Czech Republic in late June, where facilities and test locations were prepared. One advantage of conducting the test flight in the Czech Republic is the weather stability, which is significantly better than in Taiwan. However, the complexity of unmanned aviation regulations posed a challenge, necessitating numerous approvals and permits for the flights.

Testing in the Czech Republic began on Saturday, June 29, with equipment verification and calibration for Czech conditions. The first attempt, starting in the early hours of July 5, had to be terminated after 14 hours due to a technical issue. The record-breaking attempt took place on July 9 and 10, when all equipment functioned flawlessly, achieving a continuous flight duration of 25 hours and 53 minutes. Without the delayed take-off due to necessary repairs following the first take-off failed attempt, which caused more than a 3-hour delay, it would have been possible to expect a 30-hour milestone.

The 25 hours and 53 minutes duration surpassed the Taiwanese record of 21 hours and 30 minutes set by the Moonflyer team in June 2022, as well as the Czech record of 15 hours and 20 minutes set in 2020 by the Primoco model 150 unmanned aircraft.
