Overall purpose:
To work within the group of Dr Harvey McMahon at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB), within a programme aimed at understanding molecular mechanisms underlying Parkinson’s and other synucleinopathies. Specifically, to undertake research to identify factors that slow or prevent synuclein aggregation.
We have developed a novel assay for detection of alpha-synuclein aggregates in synucleinopathies such as Parkinson’s disease (PD), multiple system atrophy (MSA) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). This assay also enables the detection of early stages of synuclein aggregation in cell culture models. In this project we aim to identify factors that enhance, slow or prevent aggregation in this model system, with the goal of uncovering key modulators and potential strategies to prevent disease progression.
Academic qualifications:
These should include a PhD in a relevant subject or due to complete PhD within 6 months.
Technical skills and expertise:
Experience of and ability to perform techniques relevant to the project. Particularly useful would be experience working with neuronal cell cultures, preferably both primary neurons and iNeurons. Expertise in cell biology techniques, including immunostaining and membrane trafficking, is required. Experience in measuring synaptic function would be an advantage.
