Soochow University, Department of Sociology, Taiwan – Faculty Recruitment Announcement

1.Position
One full-time faculty position (Project Assistant Professor or above, tenure-track).

(1)Newly appointed tenure-track faculty will initially be hired as non-tenure-track faculty, in order to undergo appropriate evaluation prior to formal tenure-track appointment. Candidates with outstanding academic achievements may be exempted from this requirement.

(2)Non-tenure-track faculty who meet the Department’s evaluation standards and relevant conditions will be transferred to tenure-track positions from the following semester.

(3)To assist non-tenure-track faculty in making a smooth transition to tenure-track status, the University reduces their basic teaching load by two hours (for Assistant Professors, the reduced teaching load is seven hours per week).

3.Job Description
Soochow University, one of Taiwan’s leading private universities, has a Department of Sociology committed to its mission of “Understanding Society, Serving Society.” The Department integrates theory with practice and focuses its curriculum on Social Policy, Social Methodology, and Social Innovation, with strong emphasis on social responsibility, interdisciplinarity (including AI), and international exchange. We invite applications for a full-time faculty post. Candidates should specialize in sociology, social policy, social methodology, or social innovation, and contribute to international collaboration. Applicants must hold a PhD degree (or proof of oral defense completion by the deadline), and demonstrate capacity for teaching, research, and international engagement.

4.Qualifications and Areas of Specialization
(1)A PhD in Sociology or a related field, or proof of passing the doctoral oral defense by 30 October 2025 for final-year doctoral candidates.

(2)Specialization in sociology, social policy, social innovation, or social research, with the ability to design and deliver relevant courses.

(3)A record of publications in international journals indexed in AHCI, SSCI, SCI, or Scopus.

(4)The ability to contribute to international exchanges at both Department and University levels, including cross-national research collaboration and institutional engagement. Prior experience in handling related affairs is preferred.

5.Application Materials
(1)A copy of the PhD Degree Certificate (applicants with overseas degrees must provide certification verified by the Taiwan representative office; final-year PhD candidates must provide proof of passing the oral defense by 31 October 2025).

(2)A copy of the teaching certificate (if applicable).

(3)A curriculum vitae (in the required format, downloadable at: http://www.scu.edu.tw/society/new/trecruitment.odt).

(4)A brief research proposal setting out the applicant’s intended future research (3–5 pages).

(5)A discription of how to promote international cooperation and exchanges in the future.

(6)Syllabi for at least two proposed courses.

(7)Representative academic works from the past five years (including the doctoral thesis if applicable). Applicants must include at least one publication in an AHCI, SSCI, SCI, or Scopus-indexed journal. Works written in languages other than Chinese or English must be accompanied by an English translation of substantial length.

(8)Two letters of recommendation (waived for applicants with at least three years of full-time or non-tenure-track teaching experience at a domestic or overseas university; referees should send their letters directly by e-mail to the Department’s Faculty Evaluation Committee).

(9)Transcripts of Master’s and Doctoral studies (waived for applicants with at least three years of full-time or non-tenure-track teaching experience at a domestic or overseas university; transcripts from overseas institutions must be accompanied by a Chinese translation. If no transcripts are available, proof of coursework should be submitted).
