科技部於2017年9月4~5日上午，在國立臺灣大學理學院思亮館國際會議廳舉辦「南海國際科學研究論壇」，共計約100位國內外專家學者與學生參加。論壇中邀請多位國內外專家學者，針對地質地物、大氣與海洋環境科學等環境科學相關議題，分享在南海地區的合作研究經驗與成果，並針對各議題進行深入意見交換，對於未來在南海地區的國際科學合作研究，提出建議與規劃，期望能全面深化科學研究成果，進而吸引國際人才，促進國際學術及人才交流。
論壇完滿結束後，於6日由自然科學及永續研究發展司吳俊傑司長，率領由國內外24位學者專家所組成的國際科研團隊，登上南沙太平島進行科學研究勘查活動。國際學者包括來自美國的Timothy Byrne教授與Anne L. Cohen博士、來自日本的Tetsuo Nakazawa博士與Kosuke Ito教授、以及來自加拿大的James D. Reimer教授。這是首度有國際學者登上太平島，與國內學者共同規劃未來在南海區域的國際科學合作研究。
太平島科學勘查活動結束返回本島後，於當日晚上18:00假高雄蓮潭會館舉辦「科技部率國際科研團隊登太平島展現臺灣南海研究實力」說明記者會，由吳司長主持，與中央研究院地球科學研究所所長鍾孫霖院士、國立台灣大學大氣科學系林博雄系主任、國立中山大學海洋科學系宋克義教授、美國美國康乃狄克大學地理系 (Department of Geography, University of Connecticut, USA) Timothy Byrne教授、伍茲霍爾海洋研究所 (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, USA) Anne Cohen副研究員及日本氣象廳氣象研究所 (Meteorological Research Institute, Japan Meteorological Agency) Tetsuo Nakazawa博士等國內外學者共同出席記者會，說明太平島科學勘查成果與未來南海區域國際科學合作研究前景。

太平島海軍氣象觀測坪合影。島上的氣象觀測坪協助中央氣象局觀測溫度、濕度、雨量、風速等氣象資料，並藉由衛星傳輸方式將觀測資料傳輸回台灣本島，提供寶貴的氣象觀測資料。
吳司長於午餐用餐前代表部長致詞。
勘查太平島寬頻地震觀測站，現由中央研究院地球科學研究所維護，以衛星傳輸的方式將觀測資料傳送回地球所機房，並以台灣的名義上傳資料至(Incorporated Research Institution for Seismology, IRIS)全球地震觀測資料庫 (站名：TW.VNAS)，供國際地震研究社群分析使用。
返台後由吳司長主持召開「科技部率國際科研團隊登太平島 展現臺灣南海研究實力」說明記者會。
